What Is Free Speech?

An excellent post at Captain's Quarters blog about free speech [part below], what it does and does not mean, check it out and please follow the link to the Jonah Goldberg column.

For a nation birthed on the concept of free speech, we seem to have a very poor understanding of the concept. Jonah Goldberg notices this in his NRO column today, and uses the case of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to Columbia to make the point:

People lose the meaning of its non-confiscatory nature. Freedom of speech does not confer upon anyone the right to be published. Nor does it impose on other citizens the duty to listen or to acknowledge the speech. Most importantly, it does not grant an immunity from criticism for the speech one gives -- because that would also constrain free speech.

Jesse MacBeth. MacBeth portrayed himself as a decorated Iraq war veteran who opposed the war. Since "Corporal" MacBeth fit the left's anti-war template, the Drive-By Media lapped up his lies. The truth? Mr. MacBeth was just sentenced to five months in jail for being...a phony soldier. MacBeth never served in Iraq, never won a Purple Heart, never reached the rank of corporal, was never an Army Ranger -- and therefore never could have witnessed war crimes against Iraqi civilians as he claimed. In fact, MacBeth washed out of Army boot camp after 44 days.

AP says Hillary is taking the "time honored position" of dodging questions when you're the front runner. Talk about rationalizing! In addition, the Washington Post trashes Tim Russert for daring to ask Mrs. Clinton questions. She's not going to be able to hide behind this don't-hit-the-girl routine for much longer.

Another free Mrs. Clinton idea is $5,000 for every child born in America to invest. Sounds a lot like President Bush's evil scheme to allow you to invest 3% of your Social Security taxes, but Hillary's a Democrat, and that makes it cool.

The left had to have bad news out of Iraq. They need bad news because they're invested in defeat, and cannot accept the fact that the surge has brought Sunnis over to our side and away from Al-Qaeda. Frederick Kagan's piece in then Wall Street Journal, "Why We're Winning Now in Iraq," details the anti-war left's worst nightmare. The tide has turned, so much so that every major Democrat presidential candidate has committed to staying in Iraq through 2013

Lets us know about the new NY Governor's Driver's License idea.  Its a let the illegals have exactly what they want.

THE Department of Motor Vehicles, says Gov. Spitzer, "is not the INS" - meaning he doesn't want the DMV doing the work of granting or verifying anyone's immigration status. (He was referring to the old Immigration and Naturalization Service, now the Citizenship and Immigration Services).

Funny thing is, Spitzer's "solution" to the problem is to have New York's DMV do pretty much the same thing.

Another article about this issue, don't these people ever learn?  Here it is.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer wants to make it easier for illegal aliens to get driver's licenses. He says it would make our roads safer. Safer for whom?

Spitzer has announced an administrative policy change that says immigration status will no longer be an impediment to getting a driver's license. He reversed a post-9/11 state policy requiring valid Social Security numbers to get a license.

Under the new rule, foreign passports and birth certificates will be good enough. Proof of legal status is no longer required.

The leading Democratic White House hopefuls conceded Wednesday night they cannot guarantee to pull all U.S. combat troops from Iraq by the end of the next presidential term in 2013.

"I think it's hard to project four years from now," said Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in the opening moments of a campaign debate in the nation's first primary state.

"It is very difficult to know what we're going to be inheriting," added Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

"I cannot make that commitment," said former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina.

Sensing an opening, Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson provided the assurances the others would not.

"I'll get the job done," said Dodd, while Richardson said he would make sure the troops were home by the end of his first year in office.
