Save The Earth — Hug A Logger

As environmental alarmists entertain themselves by turning off lights, their efforts sometimes lead to unintended consequences. A new study, for example, shows they may be warming the earth by saving trees.

Never mind that it involved flying rock stars around the planet in emission-spewing private jets to plug their electric guitars into Godzilla-size amplifiers. Everything was fine, we were told, because everyone was buying "carbon offsets," a scam that lets warming hypocrites continue their energy gluttony because they're paying somebody somewhere to plant a tree.

Trouble is, according to Thomas Bonnicksen, professor emeritus of forest science at Texas A&M University, forests left in "pristine" condition have too many trees and too many dead ones, both of which provide fuel for the devastating forest fires that ravaged California last year.

Paulson's Plans

Still, the idea that the government can simply wave a wand and everything will be better is naive. Usually it's government itself that causes the problem — and then blames industry for it. That's certainly true with the subprime crisis.

Those old enough remember the Community Redevelopment Act of 1977, which in essence compelled banks with U.S. charters to lend to people who didn't have sterling credit histories. The idea was to help poor, deserving minorities get access to credit and homeownership.

But banks and mortgage lenders started putting marginal credit risks into homes they clearly couldn't afford. Today, according to Goldman Sachs, the unwinding of this problem will cost upward of $460 billion in the U.S., and more than $1 trillion globally.

But we also think that, at the end of the day, the government must operate under a kind of Hippocratic oath: First do no harm. A corollary to that is: Markets must be allowed to work. Any reform that doesn't do that is sure to be a costly failure.

What’s Black, Green, And Eco-Ridiculous All Over?

Michelle Malkin  •  March 31, 2008 07:58 PM

I know you all heard about the gesture politics stunt known as “Earth Hour” over the weekend, in which countless eco-activists around the globe turned off their lights and recreated the Dark Ages to help “raise awareness” of the environment. Because, you know, there isn’t enough Awareness Raising about it–what with radical environmentalism being crammed down your kids’ throats and Al Gore everywhere and John McCain crusading against global warming, etc., etc., etc. Anyway, as many of you noticed, Google jumped on the bandwagon by turning its search page black.

The thing is, as tech bloggers have noted, it takes more energy to power black pages than white ones.

Yes, to raise awareness of the need to conserve energy, Google caused its users to use more energy than they normally would.

But hey: Google Cares.

Next up: Google apparently plans to help the enviros flood Capitol Hill with phone calls

Secular? Hardly. These people belong to a cult–a cult that fewer and fewer sane public officials are willing to fight.

For sanity, check Sen. Jim Inhofe’s blog.

He’s an endangered species.

McCain A Rockefeller, "Moderate" Liberal Republican

"It's a mistake to keep focusing on the fact that Clinton and Obama lie. Focus on their liberalism. We learned in the 90s: liberals don't care if their candidates lie."

The Politico: Obama Had Greater Role on Liberal Survey

The Washington Post Fact Checker: Obama Lied About Kennedy Connection

McCain has agreed with the liberals on closing Guantanamo
and some callers -- who project their own tough-on-terror views on McCain -- think that's great, 'cause McCain will surely be tough on them later. What else is McCain saying now that he's going to change after he's elected? Tax hikes, anyone?

Media-Manufactured Recession

How much is the media talking down the economy? John R. Lott Jr. goes to the numbers:A Google search on news stories during the three-month period from July 2000 through September 2000 using the keywords “economy recession US” produces 1,610. By contrast, the same search over just the last month . . . Go

Democrat Rep. William “Bribe-Loc” Jefferson Gets A Reprieve

Michelle Malkin  •  March 31, 2008 10:34 AM

Hey, remember corruptocrat William Jefferson? Looks like he’s won something of a reprieve–albeit temporary. I’m sure there are other members of Congress breathing a sigh of relief, too. Just in from the Supreme Court, via SCOTUSblog

WSJ has more details

Oh, and by the way, where are the Democrats who will do and say the principled thing here. Hillary? Obama? Hello?

Another Open-Borders Zealot On A Presidential Candidate’s Team

Michelle Malkin  •  March 31, 2008 01:19 PM

I’ve written about Hillary Clinton’s campaign co-chair Dolores Huerta before. During the massive illegal alien marches in 2006, she spoke at a public school in Tucson and proclaimed that “Republicans hate Latinos.”

Well, she’s back in the news proclaiming ethnic hegemony and smearing ICE agents as ethnic cleansers, via Chris Kelly

Don’t look for Republicans to say anything about this nutball.

She’s an ideological soul sister of John McCain’s extremist Hispanic outreach advisor, Juan Hernandez.

Peas in a pod.
