Almost everyone is talking about Barack Obama’s flip-flops, as the Senate’s most liberal member steadily moves to the political center and disowns firebrands like Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Fr. Michael Pfleger.

But less noticed is that Obama is not just deflating John McCain’s efforts to hold him to his long liberal record, but also embracing much of the present agenda of an unpopular President Bush on a wide variety of fronts.

Democrats Take Obama Shift In Stride

As Barack Obama moves to broaden his appeal beyond loyal Democrats, a chorus of anger and disappointment has arisen from the left. But those voices are a distinct minority because the party has a more pressing concern: winning in November.

It is hardly unusual for a candidate to move toward the middle in a general election; in fact, it is fairly standard operating procedure. That is part of what bothers some on the left.

Ben Austin, a former Clinton White House political deputy and early Obama supporter, called the senator's perceived drift "unnecessary and potentially counterproductive" for a candidate who aspires to be a transformational figure.

"To the extent progressives see him as the Reagan of the left, Reagan didn't tack toward the center," Austin said. "He moved the American electorate to the right."

No two elections are the same. Clinton no doubt gained mightily from the fact that there was no blogosphere back in 1992: The "net-roots" have been a source of much of the anxiety over Obama's moves.

But one similarity is a deep hunger among Democrats to take back the White House -- which has made many in the party willing to stomach views they might have once rejected.

Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, disagreed with Obama's support for the ruling on the right to bear arms. But from a pragmatic standpoint, Helmke said, "I think Obama probably played it the right way politically."

Sure, San Fran Nan’s floundering around begging President Bush to release oil from the strategic oil reserve–anything but drilling any new wells, anywhere, I guess–but back in April 2006 she was blaming that darn Republican congress for these high prices

So coming up on eighteen months of a Democratic majority in both houses, how are we doing? Let’s take a look at those gas prices, using a little chart-making tool at Gasbuddy:

Lookee there. Did she say Congress is responsible for the price of gas? Well, if Fancy Nancy’s going to ladle on the sauce for the goose, let’s spoon a little on the gander.

She’s had eighteen months of Democratic control in both houses to accomplish whatever magic she thought she could pull off. And after eighteen months, the Dems in Congress certainly haven’t made gas prices any better, though at least they have made gas prices have less volatile and more consistent.

Consistently higher.*

* I’m not even saying that the Democrats get all the blame for high gas prices, though certainly their pigheadedness and footdragging contributes to them. But if Nancy Pelosi’s gotten comfortable over the past two years demagoguing the price of petrol and blaming it on Republicans, well, two can play at that game, can’t we?

Fannie, Freddie, FUBAR: The Mother Of All Bailouts

Oh, triple-crikey. God save us from bipartisanship again. Washington is in a tizzy over the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac financial crisis. The stocks plunged yesterday and a former Fed governor declared them “insolvent.” Keep an eye on the markets this morning for more freefall. Panicked Republicans and Democrats have joined clammy hands to declare their fealty to these behemoth government-sponsored enterprises because they are “too big to fail.” The Drudge headline and descriptions in the MSM of a “takeover” are misleading. The long-troubled, corrupt institutions are already federally chartered, exempt from normal securities regulations, and enjoy multi-billion-dollar lines of credit from the US Treasury. This won’t be a “takeover,” but a massive, ginormous, Mother of All Bailouts

This morning, McCain says “I don’t think that there is a requirement for a government bailout” while reiterating that Fannie/Freddie “must not fail.” Cognitive dissonance, desperate straddling, or totally out of touch with reality? Take your pick. Even the free-market WSJ supports a federal bailout. Agh.

I’ve long warned of the inexorable bailout frenzy in the wake of last year’s stimulus-palooza. The Fannie/Freddie rescue will make the Bear Stearns bailout look like chickenfeed.

Barack Obama is making hay out of McCain adviser Phil Gramm's unpolitic claim that 'we've sort of become a nation of whiners.' But Gramm is right that America's economic stature is underappreciated.

How many U.S. jobs have been lost since the inception of the North American Free Trade Agreement?

Actually, nearly 25 million jobs have been gained. Nearly all economic studies say NAFTA's net effect on jobs was negligible.
